What Afinar collects, who holds it, and how we keep it safe.
Afinar LLC, 1209 Mountain Road Pl NE, Suite 13412, Albuquerque, NM 87110, USA, decides how the data on this page is used. Write to support@afinar.app about anything here.
What stays on your machine
Your takes, any video you film, and the tones you add are stored on your Mac. Afinar never uploads your audio or your takes.
When you record, Afinar keeps the music you played along with inside your take, so you can hear yourself with it later. It stays on your Mac. Afinar doesn’t download songs.
Afinar for iPad sends nothing: no usage data, no crash reports and no account. Your recordings stay on your iPad unless you share them.
When Afinar listens
Afinar listens only while its window is on screen, during setup, while Hear yourself is on, while an instrument is muted, and while you record. The rest of the time it has no input open, and its menu-bar icon is dark.
When you record, it records your playing and the song from the one app you chose.
The camera films only while it’s switched on.
What the app sends us
If you agree when you first open the app, Afinar sends us how you use it: how long it was open, how many takes you saved, how many times you muted each part and with which quality setting, how many errors it hit and the name of each, any crash reports, and a short daily check-in with the Afinar and macOS versions. All of it is tied to a random ID for your install. It never sends your audio, recordings, videos, or song titles.
Nothing is sent until you choose, and you can change your mind any time in Settings, under Send usage data. Afinar also checks for updates, which sends the version you have.
Cloudflare stores the usage data for us and can’t use it for anything else.
If you choose to connect a TONE3000 account inside Afinar, the tones you browse and download go to TONE3000 under that account, as they would on their own website. The pictures of those tones also load from TONE3000 while you browse. See TONE3000’s privacy policy for how they handle it.
Afinar for Windows
Everything on this page about the app applies to Afinar for Windows too, with your PC in place of your Mac. These are the differences.
Your takes, any video you film, and your tones stay on your PC. Afinar never uploads your audio, your video or your takes. It uses the camera and your input, usually an audio interface or a microphone, only on your PC, to record and to let you see and hear yourself.
Afinar opens your input only once its window has been shown. Starting with Windows opens nothing. While the input is open, Afinar’s icon in the taskbar tray shows it, and Windows shows its own microphone sign. Afinar turns Hear yourself off after ten quiet minutes.
Setup asks two separate questions on first run, one for usage data and one for crash reports. Nothing is sent unless you say yes, and you can change either one any time in Settings, under Diagnostics. Turning one off deletes what it hasn’t sent yet. Turning both off also deletes the random ID for your install. Setup asks you to say yes only if you’re 16 or older.
Usage data has the same contents as on the Mac, plus how many takes had video, and the daily check-in carries the Windows version. A crash report carries a short list of where in the program the crash happened, and the error’s code. It carries no copy of your PC’s memory, no file paths, and no user name or email address. Both go to our own server on Cloudflare, and we keep them for 2 years.
Send feedback carries your PC’s model and the Windows version in place of the Mac’s. As on the Mac, it uses a random ID made only for feedback, never the usage-data ID. If you tick Include Afinar’s recent log, Afinar removes your user name and home folder from the log, but it can still contain device names, tone names, take titles, file paths and error details. If you’re offline, Afinar saves your message and sends it when you’re back online.
If you get Afinar from the Microsoft Store, the Store installs and updates it, and Afinar doesn’t check for updates itself. Microsoft handles that under the Microsoft Privacy Statement. A copy downloaded from this website checks for updates as the Mac app does.
Measuring and advertising on this website
If you agree, this website uses cookies and similar tools from Meta, Google, and Reddit to measure visits and to show you Afinar ads on their sites and apps, based on your visit here. Nothing loads until you choose, and you can change your choice anytime under Cookie settings.
The cookie policy lists each cookie, who sets it, and how long it lasts.
For the advertising tools from Meta, Google and Reddit, Afinar and each company decide together to collect data on this site and send it to them, so we are joint controllers for that step. Afinar is responsible for asking your consent and telling you about it. Each company is responsible for what it does with the data once it has it, including requests to see, correct or delete what it stores. You can write to Afinar or to the company. Meta’s summary of its arrangement with us is at facebook.com/legal/controller_addendum. Their privacy policies: Meta at facebook.com/privacy/policy, Google at policies.google.com/privacy (and how Google uses data from sites like this one at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites), and Reddit at reddit.com/policies/privacy-policy.
Cloudflare, which hosts this website, counts visits without setting a cookie.
When you download Afinar or it updates itself, we count it by day, country, the site you came from, and whether it’s a new download or an update. Your IP address is used only to work out the country and isn’t stored, and no cookies are used. We keep only the totals, which can’t identify you.
Signups, email, and support
If you applied for beta testing or asked for a launch notification on this site, we use the name, email address, instrument, and note you gave us to contact you about testing and to tell you when Afinar is available. You can ask us to stop by writing to support@afinar.app.
When you sign up on this site, your name, email address, instrument, note, and which page you signed up from go to our own server. We use Brevo to send emails to people who signed up, such as the confirmation when you sign up and a note when Afinar launches. Brevo also runs the backup signup form your browser is offered if it cannot run ours. Requests made through Brevo require email confirmation before being added to our signup lists. See Brevo’s privacy policy for information about its processing. Brevo counts how many of our emails are opened and how many links are clicked, in total only. It doesn’t record who opened or clicked.
If you ask to hear when Afinar for Windows launches, we keep your email address to tell you when it does. If you also tick the news box, we send you the occasional news about future launches. We keep your address until we send that email, or until we decide not to bring Afinar to Windows. Then it’s deleted, unless you also asked for news. We never share your email address.
If you ask us to email you the Mac download link, we send that one email to the address you give. If you also tick the news box, we send you the occasional news about Afinar. Otherwise we delete your address within 30 days. We never share your email address.
If you join the teachers list, we keep your email and any answers you give (what you teach, about how many students, in person or online) to write to you about tools for teachers. We send one email to confirm first. Unsubscribe from any email, or write to us to be removed.
If you email support, we receive your address, message, and any attachments you send so we can respond to your request.
If you send feedback from inside the app, in Settings under Send feedback, it goes to our own server on Cloudflare. It carries your message, its type (an idea, a problem, or something else), the reply email if you give one, the Afinar and macOS versions, and your Mac’s model. For a problem, it also carries the app’s recent log, but only if you tick the box to include it. It uses a random ID made only for feedback, never the usage-data ID. A copy reaches our feedback inbox by email, sent through Brevo. Our server doesn’t read your IP address. We keep feedback for two years, then delete it.
