What Afinar needs
The Mac
A Mac with Apple silicon, running macOS 26 or later.
Your instrument
Use a class-compliant USB audio interface to connect your guitar or bass. Choose it during setup, or later in the You card on the Record tab.
You can also use the Mac’s built-in microphone, for an acoustic instrument or your voice.
Use wired headphones when you hear yourself. Speakers can feed the song back into an open microphone, and Hear yourself doesn’t work over Bluetooth.
Permissions
Microphone, asked for in the setup window. It’s how any audio input reaches an app on macOS, including your interface.
System Audio Recording Only, asked for in the setup window. It’s how the song gets into your take cleanly instead of through a microphone.
Camera, asked for the first time you turn on the camera.
You can review these permissions in macOS System Settings → Privacy & Security.
Disk space
Allow storage for your takes. Filmed takes use more space than audio-only ones.
Internet
Recording doesn’t need a connection, though the app your song plays in may.
Afinar uses one to check for updates and to download tones.
What Afinar sends is set out on the privacy page.
